Skye Trials Championship 2011. Sunday the 20th of November, at the Heaste Road.
This is the trial we held after the October trial that was
held in Kilmuir. Only 3 people turned up at the Kilmuir trial, for what would
have bean a brilliant event. The weather was not the best but remember this is
motor cycle trials, so who cares what the weather is like.
Anyway, on to what turned out to be the best club trial that
we have ever had at the Heaste venue.
10 sections were to be ridden 3 times to find out the best
rider of the day. Unfortunately for Allen Cowe jr, he was the only A class
rider on this occasion. This did not dampen Allen’s enthusiasm as on his first
lap he dropped 8, and he only dropped 4 points on each of the next 2 circuits.
This was still too good for the rest of the riders ridding in the slightly
easier B routs. Still, all the riders had quite a difficult day as all of the
sections were very long.
There was something brand new for the first two sections. Section
1 was next to the car park area. This had 3 steps, the second 2 steps were pretty
straight forward but the first step had a tight right hand turn as the riders
had to negotiate a sharp rock that was sticking up right in the middle of the
step. A.C jr. [ 250 Sherco] was best
here on his last lap as he footed at the sharp rock then went on with his 2
feet firmly sticking on to the foot rests. In the B class, Kenny Finlayson [250
GAS GAS] was the only rider to get past the sharp rock clean but needed 2 steadying
prods to get him threw the ends cards.
Mike Lee [250 Beta] and Mat Wakeford [250 Scorpa] also managed 2 on this
section on the second lap.
Up the hill for the next new section, [section no.2]. This
section was a zig-zagging section. A big difference between the A’s and the B’s.
A.C jr. made the huge steps look easy as he just cruised through to the end
cards at the top of a 15 foot step. This section was cleaned many times in the
B route. The riders ridding in the B’s did not ride the big steps.
The Marathon section, [section No.3], Mike Tweats just loved
this section, [half way up this very long drainage ditch, Mike footed and
stopped to get some piping practices in] then carried on to the end cards for a
well earned 3. Following Mike on lap 2 Granddad to be, Allen Cowe sr. rode up
the ditch nice and steady for a well earned clean which he could not achieve on
the last lap.
Section 4 was an old
favourite, as this river was ridden in the opposite direction as we would
normally ride it. Maybe not the best ride here, but the most memorable was on
the second lap, Mat Wakeford , ridding the B route: Mat dropped into the burn,
rode straight through the deep hole,
[which Mike Tweats had ½ filled in], out the first banking, up and around the
mound of earth, down the steep 10 foot banking then crossed over the burn, up
onto the small banking then a wee tight turn, Mat then dropped his front wheel
back into the burn for the third time and on this occasion, Mat’s Scorpa took a fancy to the other banking
and the front wheel got stuck in the mud [oh dear]. Down went the bike and so
did Mat, head first into the burn[oh dear]. Mat was OK, just a little wet [ha
ha.], so of we went to section no 5.
Section no.5, another
new section. For A.C. jr. and Mat, this river had a small water fall/step with
water coming down it. Allen managed a clean here. In the B route, where the
riders did not have to ride the step/waterfall, there were some hard working
trials riders trying to get to the end cards. None other than Angie Grant [the
only school boy rider here today ridding his little 125 Gas Gas]. Grant Watkins
[250 Sherco] scored his first clean here on his second lap.
Section no. 6, this section crossed through a small burn
then twisted through some rocks, up over a steep rock face and then down over a
small bolder field and out the end cards. In the three laps this section did
not take any 5’s. A.C. jr’s rock step was quite a wee bit bigger than in the B
route, not that it made much of a difference, as Allen rode up this 7 foot step
like it wasn’t even there.
Back into the river
for section no.7, then up over a large lump of heather and rock, then down into
a turn through a pool of water, then over some small rocks and up a groove in
the banking. Allen Cowe snr. [250 Beta] cleaned this on lap 2. Mike Tweats,
Kenny Finlayson, Mike Lee and Grant Watkins all cleaned this section but if
there was a prise for the fastest person to ride through a section, there would
be no competition. Our answer to VALENTINO ROSSI. The rocket [Ross Nicolson 280
GasGas] would definitely win that prise. To be the observer, you had to be
quick.
Section no.8 was guess where, yes, back through the river
then onto the banking on the other side of the river, then dropping back into
the river again, through and back over the other side, up a small wee step and
into a small rocky burn with a muddy right turn and out over some greasy
boulders to the end cards. At the first part over the river and up onto the
banking, it was a much bigger banking for A.C. jr, as on lap 1 he had to foot
and pull his Sherco back so he would not miss the red marker. Once again the
rocket held the record for the fastest ride through from start to finish.
Section 9, the wall. This was a wee bit longer than usual
but it did not give any problems.
The last section no.10. Yes, back into the river. Normally
this is section no. 1. Angie Grant almost had his only clean here on his last
attempt but for some unknown reason he footed on the last river crossing.
Thanks to everyone who attended. This was a brilliant event
thanks.

Skye Trials Championship 2011. Sunday the 9th of October, at the Heaste Road.
11 o’clock
on Sunday morning and round 8 of the Isle of Skye’s trials championship was
getting under way.
Due to the bad weather, over night, section 1 was put
of till the second lap. Hopefully the water level would drop a few inches to
let the riders into the river without drowning there bikes.
Section 2 and 3 turned out to be good warm up sections
and did not cause any major problems, unlike sections 4 and 5. These two
sections were back through the deeper than usual river. Both Allen Cowe jr.
[250 Sherco] and Dveed Eckl, A class school boy [125 Beta], had little problems
in section no 4 as all the riders had to: cross the river, then ride up the banking,
round two tight turns, one to the right and then one to the left, then up over
a large lump of soil, back down and through the river again then through the
ends cards. [250 Montesa rider] Mat Wakeford was first into this section. He needed
to use 2 steadying dabs to help him through to the end cards. A few more dabs
were dropped here, but best of all was on lap 2 as Allen Cowe sr. [250 Beta]
had a trip over the handle-bars as he crossed the river. Allen hit the large
bolder right in the middle of the river. His bike stopped and wee Allen kept saying,
Allen doesn’t need a shower after the trial now. Yes the water was a wee touch
cold I think.
Section no. 5 was only cleaned by Mike Lee [250 beta]
and young Dveed on the first lap. The route for this section was back through
the deep river, then turn left up into a small fast running stream for 5 meters
and then a wee right turn, up over some boulders and out the end cards. By the
time the last lap came round the river had dropped in depth and lots of cleans
were being scored. At this point on the second lap the competition was pretty
close between Granddad Kenny Finlayson [250 GasGas] and Mike Lee, as there was
very little points separating them.
Section 6 in the B class turned out to be very loose
in this very long twisty burn. This section took some points early on due to
the deep and fast flowing river. It was going to be the same route for all the
riders until the second lap when A.C. jr. and Dveed got there heads together
and decided to ride the 25 foot water fall that had not been used since the
days of the club being part of the Scottish championship. Only 1 clean was
scored here, that was on the last lap by A.C.jr. [Well done. You’ve got to see
this water fall]
Long and tedious was the nattier of section 7. This
section was not very hard but it was about 120 meters long. Many cleans were
scored but if you did not concentrate you would put a foot out unnecessarily. On
lap 3 Mat Wakford ridding his old Montesa [still going] scored a well earned
clean to the amazement of all the other riders watching.
Back in the river for sections 8, 9 and 10. No. 8 was
the trickiest section of the day for the A class. Both A.C. jr and Dveed Scored
3s on the first lap and as the day wore, both riders were getting through for
lower scores.
Section 9, this
section was run back to front for the first time ever. Martyn Macdonald [125
Sherco] managed a clean on his second lap, and then mirrored that on his last
lap as he was rapidly improving after lap no. 1.
Section 10, this was the CLARK of the Course’s old favourite.
By this time on lap 3 Granddad Finlayson had put a small margin of points
between himself and Mike Lee. Mat and his Mont were not far behind and after
his wee soaking on lap 2 Big A.C. was catching up fast.
Back to section 1 at the beginning of lap 2. The water
had dropped 4 or 5 inches. This section was changed slightly due to the river
being about 3 feet deep. Ross “the rocket” Nicholson [280 Gas Gas] was first up
as he rode his bike threw at about 30 mph for a 3 point score. [Someone told me
that trials was a slow sport]. On the Rocket’s second attempt, he tried an even
higher gear. Well this is how the Rocket road the section:
Down the
banking into the river, front wheel first, then over to the other side, over
the jumble of rocks that were hiding just under the serifs of the fast flowing
river, then picking up speed the Rocket charged over to the other side of the
river. There was a huge splash as a 280cc motor cycle was entering the deepest
part of the river then climbed up onto the river bank.
For the other riders, the next part was easy; you just
ride along the river bank. After the banking all the other riders were dropping
back in to the water and then right back out and in again. All the other riders
rode around the 5tone’ish sized bolder then out the ends cards. Not the Rocket. Up on to the river banking
came the Rocket [accelerating all the time] and instead of dropping into the
river this GAS GAS and its rider jumped over the gap and nose dived straight
into the 5tone bolder and on this occasion for the first time ever the huge
bolder did not move [?] out of the way. The Rocket had to retire after the
front bucket on his jcb broke of. Good attempt. That was the trial over for Ross
on this occation. Have a good holiday Ross.
This was a great event and I think every one had a
good day. I will see you all on the 23rd of this month up in Kilmuir at Allen
Cowe’s .

Skye Trials Championship 2011. Saturday the 18th of June at the Elgol Gala.
ELGOL GALA TRIAL 2011
This trial in the past has been one of the most enjoyable events on the calendar and this year was no different. At 11 o’clock the riders headed down to the bottom of the hill for the start at section Number 1. Quite a lot of spectators gathered to watch and see what was going on. Granddad Kenny Finlayson {250 GAS GAS / over 50 class] was the only clean on the first lap riding the B route. Young Allan Cowe riding his grandfathers old 200 Fantic and Dveed Eckl [125 Beta / A schoolboy]. Both these boys did well in this section, with Dveed cleaning it but young Allen had a wee stumble on the slippery grass after the rocky step, finishing the section on a 2. Section 2 saw Kenny Finlayson ride up this extremely slippery river cantering along side his Gas Gas. [Should he not be riding on top of his bike] and scored one of only a few 5’s of the whole trial. Mike Tweats seemed to get lost while half way up the river but Mike managed to recover for only 1 mark lost. In the A class, Allen Cowe jnr. slipped at the start of the burn and escaped for a 1 mark lost. Dveed slipped at the greasy ditch half way through the river. Dveed got out the ends cards for a 2. Martyn MacDonald [125 Sherco/ B schoolboy] was having trouble figuring out the start of section no. 3. At the start you would keep the front wheel pointing straight on as you rode over the large lump because if your front wheel was to turn right or left the bike would come to a sudden stop and the rider would be thrown over the handle bars. Martyn had a steady 3 here. Allen Cowe jnr. and Dveed both dropped single 1’ns here on the hard route. Young Allen Cowe’s 20 year old Fantic decided to drop the pipe that goes from the air filter box to the carburettor. The pipe fell into the slippery burn in the middle of section no. 4. Allen turned the throttle full on, the bike sucked a whole lot of water into the carb [motor bikes don’t like this] and just about stopped the engine, don’t know how he kept his little bike going but he managed to get over the step and out the ends cards for an amazing clean. Ross Nicolson [280 Gas Gas / B class adult] rode through for a great clean on this first attempt. Things will be different in the next two laps when Ross’s sister was out with her camera. Section number 5 took some points. Quite a slippy section at the start and Allan Cowe Snr. [250 Beta / ov50 class] Ross and Mike all footed out for a few points whilst Kenny got lost after he had rode over the hard part of the section for his only other 5 of the day. Dveed’s rear wheel spun out before one of the steps and his bike slammed right into it, he continued the section for a tidy 1. Young Allen cleaned this section on his tiny Fantic. This was in the slightly harder route. The only double section of the day was number 6 and 7. Martyn MacDonald had his first clean of the day on section 7. In the A’s Dveed had a 1 and a 2 and Allan and his old Fantic had a 2 and a 1, both riding over the much bigger boulders. Section no. 8, Allen Cowe Snr, Mike and young Martyn were taking a dislike to the drop off into the river. These boys dropped points here all day, so they know what they have to practice on before the next trial. Kenny took the odd point here. Over in the A Class Allen and Dveed dropped some points on each lap. This was the same story in section 9 where in the A class the 2 riders had a large peat step before the ends cards. There was a tight turn before the step so there was no run up just open the throttle and let it go. This step did not let any of the 2 riders throw for less than 1 point. Section no. 10. This was a long river section again [what’s new] then the riders had to steer threw a small rock outcrop and for the first time at this event all riders had to ride up the water fall to the ends cards. [the clerk of the course was not very popular]. No problem for the A class but in the B class the entertainment was brilliant. Allen Cowe Snr. and Mike had big crashes at the ends cards, but the Rocket Ross Nicolson totally parted company with his trusty Gas Gas, the bike was in the river as Ross eventually came to a stop meters away from his trusty steed. The next 2 laps were rode very quickly as we tried to get finished before the DUCK RACE started. Well that did not really work as the boys had to ride sections 6 and 7 at the end Back at section no. 2 on the 2nd lap; Young Dveed was caught on camera [by Ross’s Sister] as he had a wee trip over the handlebars before he even got into the section! Ross was not missed by that camera as he crashed over the bars at the end of the 7th section. [Click] After the event came to the end we decided to have a KING of the hill for a little fun. Kenny Finlayson was best here as he had 3 clean attempts. Ross’s last attempt was the most entertaining as he cleaned with absolutely no control as he came so close to crashing into someone’s silver Toyota land cruiser. Dveed and Allen Cowe Jnr. also cleaned the hill on their last attempt. Old Finnie had 1 poor go at the section, he failed miserably. Many thanks to the gala for letting us have this trial along with their GALA. Brilliant event and thanks to all the boys for making it to this trial.
I’ll see you all at Kilchrist on the 3rd of July.

Skye Trials Championship 2011. Sunday the 8th of May at Kilmuir.
Kilmuir on the Isle of Skye was the venue for this month’s championship trial. 3 laps of 10 sections were laid out by clerk of the course [Allan Cowe senior]. Dry windy weather was the order of the day. If the weather was wet the scores would have bean a lot higher, and as the weather was great and the scores were slightly lower than usual.
At about 11 o clock the riders and spectators headed of to the first section. The A route was a little harder than the B route. Dveed Eckl [125 Beta – A/sb] and Allan Cowe jnr {250 Sherco] found the step at the beginning of the section quite tight and both riders footed over this huge bolder. No riders in the B class had problems here until the last rider [grand father to be] Kenny Finlayson [250 Gas Gas – ov/ 40]. Kenny shut off the throttle to early on the second climb and did not make it to the end markers on this occasion.
Sections no. 2 and 3 gave the riders no problems.
Section no. 4 was a different story on the first lap. A small shower made the nice green grass very slippy [like ice]. The rider’s rode through the start markers, over a boulder field, down into a dry hole then a tight turn on a slope and blasted up a steep banking. Only a few of the B class did not make it to the end cards. The steep climb was very much different in the A class though; someone put this huge rock in the middle of the banking and the 2, A class riders had to ride straight over. Allen Cowe, went first [the master]. The boulders were no problem. Down into the hole and round the tight turn, [No problem] big revs, let go the clutch and he went right over the huge bolder like it wasn’t there. Allan landed 10 feet away from the ends cards so he just rolled threw for a clean. Dveed [the young padawan], cleaned over the boulders, he was ok into and threw the hole. The blast over the bolder was identical to the masters. [You can’t learn by just watching].
Section no 6 was the next killer. The riders road through the starts, then over a small jumble of rocks, zig zag up a steep banking, over an old wall, then to finish with the boys having to ride up a small grassy banking. Well that was the easy route. Matt Wakeford [250 Scorpa] and Mike Tweats were best on the first lap. Both had clean attempts. What can I say about the A rout. These 2 boys had a 45 foot cliff to ride up before they got to the ends cards. The master had a steadying prod at the top of the cliff whilst young Dveed footed threw for a well earned 3. On lap 3 Dveed cleaned this section and there was a cheer of appreciation from the small group of spectators who were watching the riders from the top of the cliff.
Section no 9. One of the best sections that the rider's ride all year. This section was only ridden by the A class until the last lap when the Clark of the course done a way with the B route and every one had a shot at the Scottish six days type section. Allen Cowe jnr. was best here with two 1s and a clean. Dveed three footed this one on lap 1 and 2. He almost cleaned it on the last lap, but he footed on the last rock step then rode out for a 1.
At the end of lap 1 Mike Lee and Matt Wakeford were close with only 5 points separating them. Granddad Finlayson was next on 8 points. The rocket Ross Nicolson [250 Gas Gas] was on 9 points. Mike Tweats [250 Scorpa ov/40] was on 15 points. Allan Cowe was next on 23 points. Martyn Macdonald [125 Sherco B /sb], who was gradually improving as the lap was coming to an end, was next on a score of 42 points.
After a short tea break the next to laps were run in quick succession. Lap 2 saw every ones score come down by quite a bit, until section no. 9 on the last lap. This is when every one was made to ride the hard section. All riders made a fair attempt at this section. Martyn MacDonald fived this one but his ride was very determined until he stalled his bike. I did not see the rocket ride this section. One minute he was at the bottom and the next he was right by my side at the end cards. [4th gear and give it the blades is what he told me]
At the end of what was probably the best trial of the year so far. The weather held out and we had a nice dry, windy day. Sections were just right. Allan Cowe Jnr’s score of only 9 points was quite incredible because if it had rained his score would have been twice that. Dveed Eckl’s score of 7 on the last lap was a huge improvement from his first two laps [remember Dveed was riding in the A class with Allen Cowe Jnr].
Well done to all the riders and helpers for making this trial very enjoyable. Big thanks to Mrs Cowe for feeding all the boys after the trial. [Brilliant]. And I will see you all at the Elgol Gala trial.

Skye Trials Championship 2011 Sunday the 10th April at Kishorn.
Over at Kishorn in Mr and Mrs Tweets garden the Skye Trials club ran round NO. 4 of this year’s trials championship. Could not have asked for better weather. [A summer trial in April.] [Great and no flies] 11 o’clock and off we went to section no 1. This section started in the river, riding up a greasy banking, then a drop into the ford (a road through a river) and then back into the river, then, over to the other side of the river and out up a 5 foot banking, and out the ends cards. Grant Watkins [riding his newly acquired 250 Sherco] road all the way from start to the ends cards for a clean. [This was the first clean of the day] On to section no 4. The start of this one is up 3 slippy steps, then a right turn over a three foot step [the A class road up another huge rock face then down the other side] then up a very muddy groove to the ends cards. Kenny Finlayson [250 gas-gas] and Matt Wakeford [250 Scorpa] were best first time around. Both riders got round for a 1 dab penalty. In the A class Robert Smith [300 gas-gas] road round for a steady 2 pointer as young David Eckl fell as he dropped down of the huge step half way round the section. Next section was over the hill and round to section no 5. This section was thought to be easy but it turned out to be very hard. [Section is a long muddy climb with a tight turn down a grippy step and out the ends cards. Ruaridh Morrison [125 Yamaha] was best first time round with a very easy looking clean. Matt, Kenny, young David and Robert Smith all cleaned this one later on. Robert Smith and David Eckl both got the lowest score of 2 on section no 6, great attempts at what was probably the hardest section of the day. There were mostly 3 point scores here and the odd maximum. One of them was from Mike Tweets [250 Scorpa] on the last lap where he just ran out of steam. Section 7 was a long climb then over sharp rocks at the top of the climb. Matt’s 1 point score on lap 1 was best first time round. Mike Tweets also had a 1 point attempt. This was the best on the second lap. Best all day was a clean on the last lap by Ruaridh on board his trusty old Yamaha. On the 8th section Grant Watkins had the most memorable clean. This was on the last lap. He rode up and down the zig zag banking like he was still ridding his bike in the car park. In the last 3 sections of the day Ruaridh, Kenny, Mat and Mike all had treble cleans on the last lap. All the lads’ rode well to finish this very hot and energy sapping event. In the A class the 2 riders here were pretty well matched with David edging a head after half way round the second lap. At the END of this brilliant event David Eckl [125 BETA] won the A class by only 8 points from hard riding Robert Smith on his mighty 300 GAS-GAS. Well done boys. In the slightly less severe B class Ruaridh Morrison [37] won the class. He was 9 points better than Mat Wakeford [46] who was 1 point better than older statesman Kenny Finlayson [47]. Martyn MacDonald was the rider of the day. [Why?] Martyn [125 Sherco] took ill at the start of lap 2. Martyn kept riding right till the Finish. [Never give in, great ridding.] THANK’S TO ALL THE HELPERS. And to MIKE for having this trial in his garden. [Pity the gardener]

Isle of Skye motor cycle trials club championship of 2011 . This event was held outside Broadford on the Isle of Skye. Matt Wakeford [Duncraig castle] gave up his day riding to be the Clark of the course. 10 very long sections were the order of the day. This did not go down well with Allan Cowe SR [250 Beta] and grand father to be Kenny Finlayson [250 gas gas]. Both of these riders are pretty experienced at this game. [I think they could do with Satellite navigation for trials bikes.], B schoolboy class on lap 1, Jonathon Watkins [125 Beta] scored the first clean at section 4 [A long drainage ditch with lots of big rocks that had to be ridden over]. Section 5 and 6 saw Mathew MacKinnon [70cc gas gas] ride up for 2 effortless cleans. Section no 10 was the hardest section of the day and on lap 1 and 2, only Angie Grant [125 gas gas] managed to some how ride his bike through the end cards for a 3. Laps 2 and 3 saw more sections cleaned by Mathew Mackinnon, Angie Grant and Martyn MacDonald, but it was 125 Sherco rider Martyn MacDonald who was the most consistent rider of the day. Martyn, total score of 84 points was 10 better that second place rider Mathew MacKinnon. Grand father to be, Kenny Finlayson [250 gas gas] rode round the 3 lap of 10 very, very, very long sections for a loss of only 17. His last lap of only 2 points lost was only bettered by Allan Cowe jnr [250 Sherco] who was riding in the much harder A class. Kenny was followed home 11 points farther back by the rocket Ross Nicolson 270 gas gas. Corry Motors boss Jeoph Nicolson {250 Scorpa} was taking part in his first trial for many seasons . Jeoph came in 4th just a couple of points ahead of Allan Cowes snr. Still riding round on his old Yamaha, Grant Watkins cleaned some hard sections that other riders with more modern bikes were making a real hash off. [well done] Up in the sharp end [A class] there was only 2 riders out today. Club Champion Allan Cow jnr [250 Sherco] and last year’s A class school boy Champion David Eckl [125 beta] the two riders were pretty close on marks until the 3rd lap, section no 4 where the 2 A’s had to drop of a 6 foot step onto some loose stones and then had a tight turn up a steep rocky banking. Allen Cowe jnr cleaned this no problem but David’s Beta spun at the rear wheel as he tried to lift his front wheel so he could land with his 2 wheels together. Well, down he went, with a bang, a wee trip over the handlebars and a small dent in his pride. This was the only 5 mark penalty in the A class. David got straight up and on with the rest of the day. He finished the lap for an incredible score of only 14 on this lap, as well as just dropping 7 on the second lap. This event was supposed to be run in the rain. Unfortunately Saturday was a beautiful day and the trial will probably be one of the best of year. Many thanks to the land owner and Karen Finlayson for baby sitting for us all. Will see you all over at Mike Tweets [Kishorn] for round 4.

Skye Trials Championship 2011 Sunday the 6th February 2011 at Achmore near Stromeferry.
On a day when the weather was a little kinder to the Skye trials club, 17 riders turned up at the start of this event, 2 lads came down from Sheildaig and Glasgow student James Allan brought his dad out for the day all the way from Fort William.
Allan Cowe Jr was a late starter; Allan’s 250 sherco was sporting a baldy tyre named after an American detective with no hair and who liked lollipops. Not having much in the way of grip does not mean you can’t have a good ride. Section no2 was the first killer for the A and the B riders alike. The A’s were up a 4 foot step with a deep muddy approach then both the A’s and the B’s rode a left hand turn which was quite simple first time round but after the rain the turn got pretty slippy and then the section took a few points of most riders. Section no 4 and no 5 were both twisting hill climbs and on lap3 saw brilliant rides from Matthew MacKinnon 70cc Gas Gas and Martyn MacDonald 125 Sherco both riding in the B class. Mike lee [250 beta] and Matt Wakeford [250 Scorpa] rode round at the front of the field. Both riders not suffering the problems that the others had when the rain came. 250 Honda Montesa rider James Allan was having a steady ride going round on his own just behind the two front runners. No8 was every Mums nightmare section. Mike Lee chose this section as it was the muddiest section of the trial and most of the riders would be covered in the gloopy mud. Allan Cowe, Dveed Eckl and Sheildaig rider Michael Dolan [250 -4 stroke Beta] were the only boys riding the A-s. Every one else rode in the B-s. The B class all showed great attitude. All the boys had to work hard all day. None of them threw in the towel. [Well done boys] See you all at Scullamus [Broadford- Skye] on the 26h of February 2011.

SUNDAY THE 30TH OF JANUARY 2011 THE DATE FOR ROUND NO.1 OF THIS YEARS MOTOR CYCLE TRIALS CHAMPIONSHIP.
What a day. When most people were huddled up in front of the fire and watching ANDY MURRY playing tennis in Australia on telly, the Skye trials club members were on the hill out side Broadford riding their motorcycles up and down the hills and in and out the burns trying to keep there feet on the foot pegs and out of the freezing cold water. [Tough or what] [Motorcycle trials is a hard sport and it runs all year round. So if you are up for a challenge you will be made very welcome.]
At about 11. 30 ish the 2011 season got of and running at section no 1. This was a little harder for the A class riders. [Allan Cowe Jr [250 Sherco] - Robert Smith- [300 rocket powered GAS GAS, and the two A school boys Ruaridh Morrison and Dveed Eckl who are both riding 125 Beta’s. All the other riders were riding in the slightly less severe B route.
Sections 2 and 3 did not give the B class much of a problem but the small Loop in the 3rd gave the A class something to think about. The 4 riders in the A class were there scratching there heads for a while.
Section no 4 and 5 were made into a double. Young Angie Grant was the fastest rider through these 2 sections. [I think this was down to his dad as he has just repaired Angies 125 gas gas and it stuck in 3rd gear.]
No7 was and is probably the hardest section that the Skye A class riders will have to ride the bikes up. This was a 20 foot water fall, not vertical but still pretty steep and very daunting. Well done to all the boys for having 3 attempts at this one.
NO8 this section was a little easy but could most of you tell me what the red and blue markers represent?
No 9 and 10 were another double section. How many of the lads got caught out by the tree root right at the beginning.
At the end of the day a few boys had to retire due to the extreme weather. Ruaridh Morrison’s bike ran out of sparks, Mat Wakeford [ 250 scorpa ] beat Mike Lee [ 250 Beta ] by just a few marks. Martyn Macdonald seemed to have ridden round with a smile on his face all day. [Attitude 10 points ]. Many thanks to Eilidh for looking after us and getting the trial under way on this horrible winter’s day. Look forward to seeing you all at Achmore next week

by Graeme Finnie The 30th and 31st of November 2010 was the weekend of the Isle of Skye motorcycle trials clubs annual 2 day event over at Kishorn. Saturday started wet and as the morning drew into afternoon the weather just got worse. In the very slippery peat and mud [class A] David Moffat [Inverness, 250 Honda Montessa 4 stroke] and Skye’s Allen Cowe jr [250 Sherco 2 stroke] were having there own fight for the win . In each of the 3 rain drenched laps young A C narrowly got the better of travelling David Moffat .In the B class, the 9 sections were a wee touch easier than in the As. Portree high school‘s 4th year pupil Dveed Eckl was simply in a class of his own. Not even the top b class adults came close. In the B adults [Duncraig castles] Matt Wakeford [250 scorpa] went top, 8 points behind young Dveed. Following them was 2006 club champ Dunkin Youngson [Applecross/ 250 GAS GAS] out on his bike for the first time in 3 years. In the over 40s it was Mike Tweets and old Allan Cowe head to head. 16 points were the difference at the end of the day. At the end of the day there was no retirals. In extremely poor conditions just finishing was a great achievement.
Day 2 = Sunday the 31st of Oct 2010 Out came the sun. What a day, 2 new riders and a few section changes, a dry day was in order. In the As, Allan Cowe confirmed his supremacy by going round the 3 laps with a score of only 33, witch was 45 better than David Moffat. B class winner Dveed Eckl was 16 points better than Ardvasers Ruairidh Morrison. Matt Wakeford was best B adult followed by Balmacara’s Mike lee. The old boys were led by Mike tweets. It was in the C class is where some of the best action was found.Broadford’s Martin MacDonald picked himself up at the beginning of the second lap. Martin oned the forth section which was the best ride in this section all day. Angie Grant circulated the 3 laps with no kick start. Angie had a wee bit help from his poor old [fit, slim, athletic] dad. At the end of the trial I think dad was proud of the wee man. Best of all in the C class, ridding the smallest bike [70cc GAS GAS] in the trial, Sleat’s Mathew Mackinnon was brilliant all week end. Saturdays HILL CLIMB gave wee Mathew absolutely no problems. On Saturday Mathew beet Iain Grant by 4 points. Jonothan Watkins was next 10 points better than wee Angie Grant. A big thanks to every one who made the effort to come and ride this great trial as well as mike for letting us have the event in his back garden. |

The 2010 season comes to an end. SKYE MOTOR CYCLE TRIALS. by Graeme Finnie
2010 comes to an end for the Isle of Skye motor cycle trials club. Torrin was the venue for young Allan Cowe to seal the 2010 club championship with an amazing display of trials riding (look and learn boys). Allan’s only mistake was on section 2 on lap 2 when his girl friend was trying to get some AC attention when it all went wrong. (Women?) Mike Tweets and Matt Wakeford were riding together. Both boys were ridding 250cc scorpas. Matt’s scorpa was nice and quiet, powered by a Yamaha engine. Mikes Lister diesel powered motor cycle was not so quiet. Matt came up tops in the adult class and over 40 Mike came in second in the old boys behind OSE’ S, Kenny Finlayson who was riding very smooth all day on his 250 GAS GAS. Nice 1.
Ruaridh Morrison and David Eckl were the top riders in the A class. These 2 boys were so close in the 2010 championship. On lap 1 Ruaridh missed the ends cards on section 6 no lap 1 which did not look to good at the time. Lap 2 and what a fight back for Ruaridh dropping no points at all. At the end of lap 2 David was on 4, Ruaridh still on 5. Lap 3 and it was all even at the last double section (7 points). David to go first:
Up through section 11 goes David and out the ends of the 2 sections for a double clean. Ruaridh to go next. What a ride. Clean through section and into the last section. 2 feet from the end and dude lost a wee bit of balance and out goes his right foot and that was 7 points to David; 8 points to Ruaridh. David wins the trial and the 2010 championship but it is not over yet.
There had to be a ride off for two other trophies between these A class school boys. Section 10 was modified by Allan Cowe JR which included the end of the A class section. 3 attempts each and Ruaridh to go first. 1st attempt and Ruaridh went through the ends for 1 mark lost. David next to go and through the ends for 3 marks lost. 2nd attempt and Ruaridh to go and through the he does for a steady 3 marks loss. David next and he rides up the step and out the ends for a 1 mark loss. Ruaridh 4. David 4 and of they go for there last attempt, 3rd and last attempt and Ruaridh to go first. Into the section he drops, over the greasy slab. and up the 4 foot step with a tight turn, Ruaridh stumbles and foots twice , pulls him self together and shoots out the ends cards with his front wheel in the air, he lets his handlebars go for his dad to drab his little 125 beta and young Ruaridh fell back into the section (No injures he is ok). David next. He stumbles a little just at the starts cards. He steadies him self .he has his go. Up the greasy slab. Up the step and blasts his new 125 beta out the ends for the only clean. David 4-Ruaridh 2 that gives David the best rider under 16 award and Ruaridh the best under 21. What a climax to the 2010 season. WELL DONE LADS. I will see you at the dinner tonight.
Big thanks to Alie for looking after us and every one for coming to this great last event of the year.
